* The Criterion Channel
The Criterion Channel is an independent streaming service that features an eclectic mix of classic and contemporary films from Hollywood and around the world, many not available anywhere else.

Challenge

The challenge was to maintain the essence and presence of The Criterion Collection while expanding their visual strategy and target audience. The Criterion Collection is known for their exclusivity. They target film lovers that have a deeper understanding and knowledge than the rest of the average people. The Criterion Channel must broaden their audience in order to position themselves in a similar market then other streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc.

Logo

The strategy was to separate The Criterion Channel from The Criterion Collection and broaden their demographic while sustaining the essence of The Criterion Collection throughout. The Criterion C is a strong mark. In order to maintain the brand’s values, it is kept as a central feature, while expanding upon it with new letterforms that form the word “Channel.”

Color

One of The Criterion Channel’s beliefs is that films should be shown the way the director intends the film to be seen. Based on this principle, we established that there would not be specific colors that represents the brand. The strategy is to use color in a way that complements the content that’s being displayed. Picking a color that best fits the movie and using it on a gradient of 7 different tones, representing the 7 letters in Channel. In this fashion, the brand can adapt to all film styles.
Brand Statement

The Criterion Channel appreciates film as an art platform that provides highly curated and unique content that serves as artifacts of time and place.
